The Life That Did Not Go The Way You Thought

From The Life They Never Planned

By Dr. Olivia C.Q. Aiken

Chapter One

Girl, We Need To Talk About The Life That Did Not Go The Way You Thought

Let Lib tell you something straight from the heart. There is a certain kind of ache that comes when a woman looks around at her life and has to admit, “This is not what I thought it would be.”

Not because she was foolish. Not because she was selfish. Not because she had some wild, unrealistic dream that never made sense in the first place. No. Sometimes the ache comes because she had real hopes. Honest hopes. Human hopes. She believed certain things would look different by now. She thought some prayers would have been answered another way. She thought some people would still be in her life. She thought some wounds would have closed by now. She thought some pressure would have lifted. She thought some joy would have shown up in places where disappointment kept knocking instead.

That is not childish. That is human.

A woman may have imagined a marriage that felt safer, sweeter, deeper, and easier to breathe in. She may have pictured a family that healed, gathered, loved better, and stopped repeating old patterns. She may have believed the money pressure would have lifted by this stage of life. She may have thought the dream would be further along, the business would be stronger, the ministry would be easier, the children would be closer, the body would be healthier, or the heart would be lighter.

Then life did what life sometimes does.

It turned.

It delayed.

It shifted.

It changed names on the guest list.

It handed her a road she never asked to walk.

And now she is standing inside a life that has blessings in it, but also questions. She can see what God has done, but she can also feel what did not happen. She can be thankful and still tender. She can love parts of her life and still grieve other parts of it. She can praise God for what He carried her through and still whisper, “Lord, this is not how I thought it would look.”
